The tooth bite is according to its shape. Thus, rip and crosscut teeth are shaped differently to perform different tasks. Wear lowers the tooth pressure by blurring the shape of the tooth. High tooth pressure and long tooth life are desired. The Edo crosscut teeth and the graded rip teeth appeared in old Japan. These were high pressure teeth which helped to tension the blade straight in pull sawing. A clever method was devised to set hardened teeth (close to the hardness of the saw file).
